Mr. Milton Kennard Markley, Jr., age 75, of Newark, DE, died on Thursday, April 8, 2010. Born in Harrisburg, PA, on June 9, 1934, Mr. Markley was a graduate of Lower Merion High School and would go on to earn his bachelors degree in education from West Chester University and his masters degree from Temple University. His career as an educator, mentor, and principal spanned 30 years before his retirement from the Christina School District. Following his retirement, he greatly enjoyed nine years spent in Surfside Beach, SC. As a young man, Mr. Markley proudly served his country in the US Army. During his military career, his lifelong love of music led him to play oboe in the Third Army Band. Music, model railroading, and gardening were among his greatest passions throughout his life, and he was unfailingly generous and supportive in sharing his knowledge about his favorite subjects. A longtime member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church, he also gave freely of his time in assisting with confirmation classes, as well as acolyte training. He is survived by his beloved wife, Evelyn Geisler Markley; sons, John Markley (Robyn) of Newark, DE; and Brett Markley of Newark, DE; brother, Thomas Markley (Susan) of Wayne, PA; sister, Judy Rhodes of Tomball, TX; grandchildren, Jonathan Markley, Madison Markley, Megan Markley, and James Markley; and his granddog Buddy. The family would like to thank the staff of the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center and the Millcroft Nursing Home for their kindness and compassion. Visitation will be held from 7 pm to 9 pm on Friday, April 16, 2010, at St. Pauls Lutheran Church, 701 S. College Avenue, Newark, DE 19713. A memorial service will be held at 10 am on Saturday, April 17, 2010 at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Pauls Lutheran Church at the address above.
