Born January 29, 1923

Miriam Jacklitch Scarborough, age 91, of Newark, DE passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 11, 2014.

Born in Bay Village, OH on January 29, 1923, Miriam was the daughter of the late John J. Jacklitch and Edna Lins Jacklitch. She was a longtime guide and trainer at Longwood Gardens, retiring after 20 years of dedicated service.

Miriam was a gentle and loving caretaker to her family to whom she was deeply devoted. Her happiest moments were spent in the company of her adoring grandchildren. In her leisure hours, Miriam enjoyed reading, traveling and cooking. She was an avid gardener who relished time spent outdoors, tending to her well-kept flowers and yard.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dr. Ernest N. Scarborough, who passed away in 2011 and her brother, John Jacklitch. Miriam is survived by her children, James Scarborough and wife Carol of Earlville, MD, Barbara Scarborough of Greensboro, NC, Betsy Kenyon and husband Austin of Park Hill, OK and Robert Scarborough and wife Judith of Newark, DE; and four grandchildren.

The family wishes to extend their sincere thanks to the entire staff of Compassionate Care Hospice and to Miriam’s devoted caretaker, Maggy for the exceptional care they provided.

Services and interment will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Miriam’s name may be made to Compassionate Care Hospice, 702B Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19805 or to a charity of your choice.

  • To the Scarborough Family, My wife and I are sorry to hear of the loss of your dear love one. We know this is a difficult time for you and your family. We wanted to share something with you that has encouraged us during difficult times such as these. It is comforting to know that God never meant for us to experience this kind of pain.(James 1:13) (Romans 5:12) He has made provisions through his son Jesus to awaken all our love ones asleep in death.(John5:28,29) God also promises to wipe away all tears,pain,sorrow and even death will be gone forever.(Revelation 21:3,4) God’s promises in the Bible will soon be fulfilled. They give us the comfort of knowing that we will be reunited with our loved again. We pray that you and your family find peace and comfort in God’s promises for the future.(Psalms 37:10,11&29)

She was a lovely lady whose company I always enjoyed, and I know how devoted she was to your Dad and to her children and grandchildren. I last saw her not too long after your Dad died, when she came to the house for lunch with Nancy, Sue and me. Even in this time of sorrow, she was as pleasant and charming as ever.

    My Dad just told me about the loss of your Mom and I am so sorry to hear this sad news. I always looked forward to visiting each spring at your home with the beautiful flowers in bloom and wonderful food prepared by Miriam. Most of all, I enjoyed hearing your parents reminiscing about the past and the wonderful trips they took and all of the news of the kids and especially the grandkids. Oh how proud they both were! My thoughts are with you all.
