Murrell Andrew Thomas

Murrell Andrew Thomas, age 86, of New Castle, DE, passed away on Sunday, November 26, 2017.
A lifelong Delawarean, Murrell was born on August 14, 1932 to the late Murrell and Lillian Thomas. He retired from Amtrak after 42 years of dedicated service as a supervisor.
An avid sportsman, Murrell enjoyed coaching for many softball teams in his earlier years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Frances Thomas. Murrell is survived by his sons, Richard M. (Dolores), Neil A., and Steven M. Thomas; 4 grandchildren; and 8 great grandchildren.
Services and entombment will be held privately.

Murrell was one Great man, great to work for at Amtrak, Great to bowl with. And great Blue Hen Fan I will surely miss him. To his wife and family my deepest condolences and may god bless them.

CJ and I were very sorry to hear of the passing of Murrell Thomas.
He was my boss in my early years at the Railroad and he spent a lot of time covering up for our shenanigans. He often invited us to his house for a game of pool and breakfast (egg and onion sandwiches) the morning after a midnight shift.
I also played softball for teams that he coached. In my first game, he put me in as a pinch hitter with the bases loaded and one out during a rally. I promptly hit into a double play, stumbling out of the batter’s box and losing the game. Afterwards, he found humor in the moment by saying, “Hell of a debut, Bub.” What a wonderful sense of humor he had.

I’m so sad to hear this. Haven’t seen you all in far to long. Will always remember the Christmas as a kid when Nan would come to your house and we wld come visit it was always fun. He is most definitely in a better place yet it’s still painful to those left behind. Love and prayers are with you all.

I have known Murrell since i was 6 years oldAnd we have kept in touch all these many years. My birthday is March 11, AND HIS WAS APRIL ll, 1931. We still exchanged birthday cards every year and telephone calls. He was my friend and he called me sweet pea.l He was our next door neighbor on Vandever Ave. He will be missed.
