Nancy Virginia (Ayers) Hopkins

Born August 9, 1938

Nancy V. Hopkins, age 75, of Newark, DE, went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, March 25, 2014. Her passing was the result of a heart attack and subsequent stroke. While her sudden death was a shock to her loved ones, they rejoice that she is now with her heavenly Father. During her 75 years on this earth, Nancy was blessed with an amazing ability to reach out, lead and encourage people from all walks of life.

Nancy, the beloved daughter of Dr. Lloyd and Lois R. Ayers, was born in Beckley, WV on August 9, 1938. She was a dedicated wife, mother, homemaker and teacher. Nancy was also a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority; served in the Coast Guard Auxiliary, as well as in the Loyal Order of Moose where she held senior offices in each. She was a highly active and productive person whose career spanned an introduction to medicine, teaching, and homemaking. Nancy was successful in several small business endeavors, enjoyed a variety of hobbies, including collecting Hallmark ornaments, and served as a census taker. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society and greatly enjoyed music and dancing. Nancy always had a profound love of animals and will be greatly missed by her joyful Bichon, Sweetie.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by John W. Hopkins, her husband of 49 years. Nancy leaves behind her only son, Robert L. Hopkins of Georgetown, KY; grandson, Ryan A. Hopkins of Richmond, KY; 2 brothers, T.C. Ayers of Larchmont, NY and James L. Ayers of Spotsylvania, VA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Monday, April 14, 2014, at the New Castle Moose Lodge, 621 S. DuPont Highway, New Castle, DE, where a reception will follow. The Women of the Moose will remember Nancy in a special presentation at this time. Interment will be held privately in Gracelawn Memorial Park, New Castle, DE.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the University of Delaware Education Fund c/o Development & Alumni Relations, Gifts Receiving and Proessing Office, 83 E. Main St., 3rd Floor, Newark, DE 19716.

  • I am very grateful that I knew Nancy. She was a wonderful person with a wonderful babbling personality. She had a way about her that made people want to be around her. She always make you feel welcome and she was very happy to see you. She could light up a room with her sparkling personality. It’s a heavy heart to know that I will not be seeing her.
