Norman Hall Brooks, Sr.

Born December 23, 1921

Norman Hall Brooks, Sr., age 92, of Newark, DE, passed away Saturday evening, September 6, 2014 after a short bout with cancer.

He was born December 23, 1921, the second of four sons of the late Claude C. and Elizabeth M. Brooks of Glasgow, DE. He graduated from Newark High School in 1940 where he played violin in the orchestra and medaled as a sprinter in track. He also lettered in baseball and play semi-professional ball with the St. Louis Browns organization. He attended Goldey Beacom College and had a long career as a bookkeeper with New Castle County.

Norman enlisted in the Navy during WWII and took part in the invasions of Sicily, Salerno, and Aviano as a signalman on board USS Biscayne (AVP-11). He loved bowling and golfing and volunteered almost 3000 hours helping veterans at the Wilmington VA Medical Center. He was a member of the Pencader Grange, St. John’s Masonic Lodge No. 2 AF&AM, and Nur Temple.

In addition to his parents, he was pre-deceased by his wife of 33 years, Doris Mae Tubbs Brooks and by his 3 brothers Claude Melvin Brooks, Henry W. Brooks, and William T. Brooks. He is survived by 3 sons, James Norman Brooks (Gail) of Burke, VA, Gary W. Brooks of Pike Creek, DE and Norman H. Brooks, Jr., (Shirley) of St. Georges, DE; 2 daughters, Deborah Steinbrunner (Joel) of Landenberg, PA, and Cynthia Brooks (Deborah McCall) of Corner Ketch, DE; 14 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and 1 additional great grandchild whose arrival is eagerly anticipated.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am on Thursday morning, September 11, 2014 at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a visitation for family and friends will be held from 9:30 am until 10:30 am and a masonic service will be held at 10:15 am. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Delaware Hospice, 16 Polly Drummond Center, 2nd Floor, Newark, DE 19711 or to Delaware Boots on the Ground, P.O. Box 5894 Wilmington, DE 19808-5894.

  • I am so sorry for your loss! Your dad was a great man. I have loved getting to know him over the years. All the picnics, bowling, and the wedding. I am going to miss seeing him but am so glad for him as he has had a wonderful life with a very loving family by his side the whole way.
