Mr. Orval P. Lovett, Jr., age 92, of Newark, DE, passed away on Thursday, April 4, 2013.
Born in Atlantic City, NJ on June 4, 1920, Mr. Lovett was the son of the late Orval P. Lovett, Sr. and Millicent LeChard Lovett. He proudly served his country in the US Army Air Corps during World War II and would go on to earn his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Drexel University in 1947. He made his career with the DuPont Company, retiring from the Louviers site after 27 years of service.
Active in his community, Mr. Lovett was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Newark, the VFW, and the Newark Country Club, where he was an avid golfer. He greatly enjoyed traveling the world with his beloved wife, Rachel, and visited such exciting places as South America, Russia, Croatia and much of Europe, China, and Japan. He was also a talented card player and delighted in competing at bridge and duplicate bridge for many years.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Rachel Garber Lovett; children, Nancy Lewis (William) of Newark, William Lovett (Debbie) of Mohnton, PA, Susan Rutter (Mark) of Glendale, AZ, Thomas Lovett (Linda) of Portland, OR, and Barbara Johns (Ian) of Mt. Holly, NJ; sister, Ethel VanDoren of Linwood, NJ; grandchildren, Jeffrey Linwood (Cheri), Judith Linwood, Robert Linwood, Benjamin Lovett (Mindy), Matthew Lovett (Ava), Julia Shay (Daniel), Ellen Rutter, Nancy Rutter, Eric Lovett (Dana), Kelly Lovett, Thomas Lovett, Nathan Johns, and Rachel Johns; and great grandchildren, Kaylee, Joshua, Adelyn, and Lydia. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, William Lovett, and granddaughter, Elizabeth Goddard.
The family extends their most sincere gratitude to the nurses and staff of Millcroft for their many kindnesses to the family during Mr. Lovett’s residence.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 pm on Sunday, April 14, 2013, at the First Presbyterian Church of Newark, 292 W. Main Street, Newark. A reception will follow the service in the church’s memorial hall.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Lovett may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 399 Market Street, Ste. 102, Philadelphia, PA 19106; or to the Delaware Humane Association, 701 A Street, Wilmington, DE 19801.
