Born June 5, 1924

Ottavio G. Cataldi, age 93, of Newark, DE, and formerly of Barefoot Bay, FL, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 1, 2017.

Toby was born in Newark, DE on June 5, 1924, and was the son of the late Angelo and Bessie (George) Cataldi. He proudly served his country from 1943 until 1945 as a member of the U.S. Army during WWII. participating in the second wave of D-Day. In 1950, Toby accepted a position as a letter carrier with the United States Postal Service in Newark, and would eventually retire as Postmaster of the New Castle office in 1979 after 29 years of dedicated employment.

He was a longtime member of the Newark United Methodist Church. Above all else, Toby was a loving and devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, great grandfather, and dear friend to many.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Angelo Cataldi; sister, Ann Cataldi; and granddaughter, Adrienne Cataldi. Toby is survived by his wife of 70 years, Doris Houts Carson Cataldi; sons, Bruce Cataldi (Deede) of Newark and Alan Cataldi (Rebecca) of Lewes; brothers, Domenico and Dennis Cataldi; sister, Lee Ellen Wright; grandchildren, Erin Watson (Tim), Wendy Sokol (Pete), Tracy Cataldi, Lauren Cataldi May (Jeff), and Samantha Aleman (A.J.); and 9 great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday afternoon, October 6, 2017, at the Newark United Methodist Church, 69 E Main St, Newark, DE 19711, where a visitation for family and friends will be held from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm. Interment will be held privately in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, DE.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Toby’s memory may be made to the Newark United Methodist Church at the address listed above.
