Peter Synczyszyn, age 85, of New Castle, DE, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 14, 2016.

Born in Wilmington, Delaware on June 12, 1930, Peter was a son of the late Stephen and Tillie (Loboznka) Synczyszyn.

Peter attended the former H. Fletcher Brown Vocational school in Wilmington, DE. He dedicated 20 years of service to The Wilmington Fire Department. After working for the fire department, Peter worked in the inspection lanes at the Delaware Department of Transportation, retiring after 27 years of service. Active in the New Castle community, he was a member of the Joseph B. Stahl American Legion Post #30, St. Anthony’s Club, Sons of Italy- St. Gabriel’s Lodge, and the Police and Fire Rod and Gun Club. Peter enjoyed spending time at Battery Park in Old New Castle and visiting Delaware Park.

In addition to his parents, Peter is preceded in death by his brothers, John, Michael, Walter, Charles, and Stephen, Jr.; sisters, Ann Synczyszyn, Mary DeShong, Helen DuPuis, and Olga Santa Barbara. He is survived by his brother, Dimitry “Babe” Synczyszyn of Merritt Island, FL; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 12:30 in the afternoon on Wednesday, February 24, 2016, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE where a visitation will be held from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm. Interment will follow in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Holloway Terrace Volunteer Fire Company, P.O. Box 684, Manor Branch, New Castle, DE 19720.

  • Pete was a neighbor of mine in Holloway Terrace when I was growing up on East Avenue. My father John Watkins often spoke about meeting up with him at Delaware Park.
    My thoughts and prayers are with his family.
