Philip A. “Phil” Palmer
Born April 10, 1940
Philip A. Phil Palmer, age 75, of Newark, DE, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, April 17, 2015.
Born in Linden, NJ on April 10, 1940, Phil was the son of the late Philip E. and Josephine (Weiss) Palmer. He made his career as a chemical engineer with the DuPont Company, retiring in 2000 after 35 years. Phil earned his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Chemical Engineering from Cornell University. In addition, he earned a Masters of Science degree in Environmental Engineering from Drexel University. Phil served on the National Research Council in Washington, D.C.
In his retirement, Phil thoroughly enjoyed making stained glass creations, gardening, reading a wide variety of books on his Kindle, listening to classical music, and keeping up on the latest in politics. Tai Chi was one of Phil’s passions and eventually he became an instructor.
Phil is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Suzanne (Yost) Palmer; children, Philip A. Palmer, Jr. of Seattle, WA and, Kathy J. Palmer of Wilmington, DE. His love and wisdom will be greatly missed.
Funeral Services will be held privately.

I am truly sorry for your loss. Phil was a great man, friend and colleague of mine. Working with Phil at DuPont Engineering, he provided me with outstanding professional guidance, mentorship and friendship. I also received my degree in Chemical Engineering from Cornell University, so we had that special bond. He gave me great inspiration and direction in my career. I will always have the utmost respect and admiration for Phil’s knowledge and accomplishments. I also really love and agree with all the “Letters to the Editor” that Phil submitted to the News Journal over the years. I hope you will find solace in the remembrance of Phil’s tremendous life as a husband, father and friend. I will never forget him. My deepest condolences.

I have many fond memories of working with Phil in what was then the Engineering Services Division of DuPont. He was an inspiration and a mentor to so many young engineers including myself. In particular, his humility and professionalism made a strong impression. Everyone that worked with Phil had a tremendous respect for his advice and wise counsel. He was a friend as well as a colleague that we could always count on for help, whether technical or personal. Suzanne and family, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Phil was such a gentleman and friend to me. Without a doubt, Phil was one of the highest quality people I ever had the pleasure to meet. I can truly say as I reflect back that I have all fond memories working with Phil. One thing was for sure, I always felt Phil was there for me if needed. Words cannot express the sorrow I feel in Phil’s passing, but rest assured Phil is in a better place and is at peace.

Phil was a great friend from the time we met in the 4th grade in Linden, NJ. We always had wonderful time discussing many things from cars through politics. I will miss him and especially his comments on my blog.
