Christmas Eve, 1948 – June 21, 2014

Phillip James Powis, age 65, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 21, 2014.

Born in Ashland, Pennsylvania on Christmas Eve, 1948, Mr. Powis was a son of Henry James Powis and Margaret Phyllis Fusick Powis. After graduating from high school, he attended the University of Delaware prior to his enlistment in the military. He proudly served his country in the US Navy during the Vietnam War. Mr. Powis made his career as a labratory technician, working first for the Hercules Company for 29 ½ years and then for Frontier Scientific, where he was most recently employed.

Well known for his excellent work ethic, Mr. Powis was a dedicated and hardworking man. He was a skilled carpenter and woodworker, and was always willing to lend his assistance to family and friends. He was a devoted and loving son, husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend and will be missed by the many people whose lives he touched.

He was preceded in death by his father, Henry. Mr. Powis is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Patricia Ann Coyle Powis; mother, Margaret; children, Tracey Weller (Bill), Michelle Powis (Don) and Steven Powis; brothers, Jimmy Powis, Tom Powis, Glenn Powis and John Powis; sister, Margie Rhodes; and 3 granddaughters, Haley, Maddie and Chloe.

A funeral service will be held at 12:30 pm on Monday afternoon, June 30, 2014, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a visitation will be held from 11:30 am until 12:30 pm. Interment will follow in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

  • I was sadden to learn of the passing of Phil. We worked together at Frontier he was usually the first person to greet me upon entering the building. My prayers are with his family at this difficult time, may your memories of him bring you comfort in the days to come.     Please accept my dearest condolences on the loss of Phil. I have no doubt that Phil touched your life in a positive way everyday. While working at ASDI & Frontier, Phil was many times the first face I saw in the morning. Therefore, through conversation and usually eating breakfast together. Phil help start my day off on the right foot. This friendship usually spilled over to lunch together too, where the conversation and comradery continued. May he rest in peace. May the love of family and friends comfort you during these difficult times.
