Preston S. Seidel, age 87, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully at home while surrounded by his family on Friday, April 7, 2017.

Preston was born in Harrisburg, PA, on September 15, 1929, and was the son of the late Luther and Luella Mae (Matson) Seidel. He was a graduate of Wyomissing High School, where he was was a standout student athlete, lettered in every sport possible and participated in the Penn Relay. Preston attended Lehigh University and then joined the U.S. Navy, serving aboard the USS Carpellotti as a Sonarman Third Class. In 1966, he married the love of his life, Ella Swift and the two shared almost 50 years of marriage. Preston made his career with the DuPont Company where he worked as a lab technician until his retirement in 1985.

A devoted family man, he adored spending time with his loved ones and especially looked forward to Friday breakfasts with his family. Preston was an exceptional story teller whose quick wit and sense of humor could keep family and friends entertained for hours. In his leisure time, he enjoyed golfing, bowling and military history.

In addition to his parents, Preston was preceded in death by his wife, Ella M. (Swift) Seidel and a sister, Lois I. Sweitzer. He is survived by his daughters, Sheila Seidel and Jody Kershner (Jeff); and grandchildren, Jennifer Arculus (Andrew) and Bryan, Sean and Allison Kershner.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10:30 am until 11:30 am on Thursday morning, April 13, 2017 at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE, where a funeral service will begin at 11:30 am. Interment will follow in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE 19701.

    I was saddened to hear of the passing of your wonderful father and grandfather. I had shared with him all those years with his eye issues and found him to be such a remarkable human being. His intellect, wit and graciousness made the greater Delaware community a little bit better.
