R. Peter Gates

Born July 16, 1946

R. Peter Gates, age 70, of Landenberg, PA, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, October 16, 2016.

Born in Mullens, WV on July 16, 1946, Peter was the son of the late Louis and Elizabeth (Denney) Gates. He was a graduate of Claymont High School, and would later work as a mechanic with the DuPont Company, retiring after 38 years of dedicated service.

An avid racing enthusiast, Peter was named the 1986 Pro Formula Atlantic Champion. He enjoyed racing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and at Watkins Glen. Peter was a 50-year member of the Sports Car Club of America. Above all else, he was a loving and devoted husband and father and will be very dearly missed.

Peter is survived by his wife of 50 years, Freda Dawn Gates; son, Scott Gates (Jessica) of Wilmington, DE; brothers-in-law, Newell Fields (Faye) of Middletown, DE, Alan Fields (Mary Jane) of Jupiter, FL and Nick Liberman of Arden, DE.

At Peter’s request, there will be no services.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cancer Support Community, 4810 Lancaster Pike, Wilmington, DE 19807.

  • I worked at the Edgemoor site where Pete was a garage mechanic. Mostly a quiet guy- remembering going to a Virginia raceway which Pete raced in. Blessing to the Family in this time of loss.
