Rev. Herbert J. Hoeflinger, age 98, of Newark, DE passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 10, 2018.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, on August 11, 1920, he was a son of the late Herman and Mabel (Stenstrom) Hoeflinger. Herbert devoted his life as a pastor. In 1945 he began touching the lives of many. St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church became his home in 1959 and he retired after 29 dedicated years. During his tenure, Herbert was the moderator for both the Philadelphia Presbytery and New Castle Presbytery.

Passionate about learning, Herbert enjoyed studying and speaking French and German. He loved reading his kindle and playing his piano. Herbert was an avid Phillies fan. Above all, his proudest roles were husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Herbert will be dearly missed by many.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 70 years, Doris C. Hoeflinger; son, Charles Hoeflinger; daughter, Susan Lawton; and brother, Rev. Norman Hoeflinger. Herbert is survived by his children, Herbert Hoeflinger (Alice), Cynthia Arnold (David), Wendy Furry (William) and David Hoeflinger (Sharon); son-in-law, Bob Lawton; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 6 pm until 8 pm on Wednesday, November 14, 2018, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE. A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Thursday, November 15, 2018, at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 200 Marrows Road, Newark, DE 19713, where a reception at the church will immediately follow. A committal service will be held privately in Green Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Herbert’s name to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church at the address listed above.

  • I’m sorry for your loss. Losing a dad is hard, no matter how long they were with us. Love to all.

  • Our sincere condolences to the beloved family and my childhood church family at St Andrew’s Presbyterian. We dearly adored Rev.
