Robert A. Mitchell
Mr., Robert A. Mitchell of Newark, DE, passed away on Friday, July 23, 2010, at St. Francis Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was 87 years old.
Born on August 21, 1922 to Emmett and Georgia (Crissman) Mitchell and raised in New Paris, PA, Mr. Mitchell graduated from Schellsburg-Napier High School in 1941.
He proudly served in the United States Army during World War II as a military policeman stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington. Following the war, he continued his military career in Washington State, where he worked in the new field of atomic weapons technology.
In civilian life, Mr. Mitchell became a master papermaker and was employed with the former Curtis Paper Company for 40 years until his retirement in 1987.
Active in the community, Mr. Mitchell was a life member of Aetna Hose, Hook & Ladder Company, where he chaired the building committee for Station #8, which was dedicated in 1963. He was also a life member of the Delaware Valley Fire Chiefs Association, of the Cumberland Valley Volunteer Firefighters, of both the New Castle County and Delaware State Fire Police, of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #630, and of Hiram Lodge #25 AF&AM, where he once served as a Master.
When he wasnt busy helping around the firehouse, Mr. Mitchell enjoyed coin collecting, watching the Phillies, and an occasional NASCAR race, but his greatest joy was his family and the time he spent with them. He especially enjoyed attending the Delaware State Fair every year, and the more family members he was able to bring along, the happier he was. His family will miss being able to attend the fair with him. In order to keep the family congregating, he insisted that every birthday and holiday be celebrated together. He was a truly cherished patriarch.
His wife, Edith I. (Yoder) Mitchell, passed away in 1994. He is survived by his daughter, Joyce Blakeslee and her fianc, Terry Mulkins, of Elkton, MD, and son, Robert A. Mitchell, Jr. of Newark. Pop-Pop will be dearly missed by his grandchildren, Pam and Randy Space of Elkton, MD, Jason and Pamela Blakeslee of Newark, Justin Mitchell of New Market, VA, Brian and Carla Mitchell of Claymont, DE, Robert A. Mitchell III of Columbus, OH, and Amy Mitchell of Philadelphia, PA, and by great grandchildren, Randy and Karli Space, Meghan and Mitchell Blakeslee, and Brian, Mikenzie, and Zachary Mitchell. He is also survived by a sister, Sylvia M. Craighead. He was preceded in death by a brother, Bert Mitchell, a sister, Helen Oldham, and a great granddaughter, Brittany Ann.
Visitation will be held from 6 pm to 8 pm on Tuesday, July 27, 2010, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, with a Masonic service by Hiram Lodge at 7 pm. A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, July 28, 2010, at the funeral home, with visitation beginning at 10 am. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle.
