Mr. Robert E. Thomas, age 86, of New Castle, DE, died on Saturday, June 4, 2011, at the VA Medical Center Nursing Home Care Unit in Wilmington.

Born in Danville, PA, on March 27, 1925, Bob was the son of the late Harold Thomas and Gladys Sammons. He proudly served his country in the US Army Air Corps during World War II, stationed for two years in Italy. In civilian life, he made his career as a teamster with Union Local #326 in Wilmington.

Bob was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, who cherished his time with family and friends. A man of strong faith in God, his greatest attribute was his caring for others. He was always sure to make others feel a part of the family.

A great storyteller who had many interests in life, Bobs favorite hobbies were fishing, hunting, bowling, tinkering with cars, and, most of all, airplanes. He proudly assisted in the restoration of the Shoo Shoo Baby.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years, Josephine R. Cassetta Thomas, who died on February 11th of this year. He is survived by his daughter, Kathleen T. Christopher (Ted) of New Castle; son, Robert W. Thomas (Tracy) of Bear; sister, Beatrice Thomas of Wilmington; grandchildren, Ted R. Christopher II (Lisa) of New Castle, Brent Christopher (Jennifer) of New Castle, Christina N. Quillen (Dave) of Bear, Rebecca R. Thomas of Newport, and Robert M. Thomas of Bear; and great grandchildren, Colby, Damian, Seth, Delaney, Paige, and Morgan Faye.

Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 12 noon on Friday, June 10, 2011, at Our Lady of Fatima R.C. Church, 801 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, where visitation will begin at 11 am. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the VA hospice team for their exceptional care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Bob may be made to the VA Medical Center Hospice Care Unit, 1601 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19805.
