Robert Emmett O’Sullivan, Sr.

Born January 31, 1926

Robert Emmett O’Sullivan, Sr., age 89, of Annapolis, MD and formerly of Newark, DE, passed away on Monday, December 14, 2015.

Born in East Orange, NJ on January 31, 1926, Robert was the son of the late Edwin J. and Gertrude (Steele) O’Sullivan. He was a member of the graduating class of 1943 from East Orange High School and later received his Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Penn State in 1948. A proud U.S. Army veteran, Robert honorably served his country during WWII. He made his career in the refinery industry and worked with Tidewater, Getty and Texaco Oil Companies, retiring in 1985 as Chief Engineer.

In his leisure time, Robert enjoyed genealogy research. He was an avid animal lover and adored his faithful canine companions. Above all else, Robert was a devoted and loving father and grandfather and will be very dearly missed by his family and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joan (Horn) O’Sullivan. Robert is survived by his children, Colleen O’Sullivan of Springfield, VA, Robert E. O’Sullivan, Jr. (Penny) of Stratham, NH and Mary Beth Jones of Annapolis, MD; grandchildren, Nicholas M. Cope (Sarah Chase) of New Orleans, LA, Molly O’Sullivan (Anthony Paolucci) of Boston, MA, Robert T. Jones of Ashburn, VA and Kathleen L. Jones (James Ratte) of Fairfax, VA; and his beloved dog, Billie.

A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Tuesday morning, December 22, 2015, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE, where a visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11 am. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Robert’s memory may be made to the Delaware Humane Association, 701 A Street, Wilmington, DE 19801 or to the Alzheimer’s Association, 399 Market Street, Ste. 102, Philadelphia, PA 19106.

    I was sorry to hear about the passing of Bob. I think the last time I saw him was at the Funeral Mass of your mother, Joan.

    I worked for him at the Refinery in Delaware City. He was one of my close bosses before he moved to the Chief Engineer position. I couldn’t have asked for a nicer man to be my boss. I remember him and Joan having good times at the many refinery parties.
