Robert Lee Harrington

Born February 18, 1931

Robert (Bud) Lee Harrington, age 83, of Elkton, MD, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 11, 2015.

Robert was born in Wilmington, Delaware on February 18, 1931, and was the son of the late Robert W. Harrington and Katherine Casey Harrington. He bravely served his country as a member of the US Army during the Korean War. A dedicated employee, Robert made his career with the DuPont Company, where he worked as a senior mechanic for 27 years before retiring in 1992.

Bud was a racing enthusiast and raced dirt track Harley Davidson motorcycles in the late 1940s. He was a NASCAR owner/driver from 1949 until 1954. He and his son, William, raced micro midgets from 1983 through 2006. Bud won his first micro midget race at the age of 60. He had a life-long interest in farming and continued to farm throughout most of his life. In his leisure, Bud enjoyed working in his machine shop, maintaining his race car and, in his senior years, enjoyed antique tractor restorations. He and his late wife, Lorene, were an exceptional team, and the two spent many happy hours working together on the farm or in the ceramic shop she owned. Above all else, Robert was a loving and devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, great and great great grandfather, uncle and cousin and will be dearly missed.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lorene Mae (Bolt) Harrington and a sister, Mary Jane Hood. Robert is survived by his sons, Richard Harrington of Cheyenne, WY, William Harrington (Laurie) of Elkton, MD, John Harrington (Robin) of Elkton, MD and Glenn Harrington (fiancée, Pat) of Bear, DE; sister, Peggy Dorsey of Claymont, DE; 9 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandson.

A committal service will be held at 1 pm on Friday afternoon, February 20, 2015 at the Delaware Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE. A memorial luncheon for family and friends will be held at 11 am on Saturday, February 21, 2015 at the Rail at Delaware Park, Veranda Room, 777 Delaware Park Blvd, Wilmington, DE.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Cecil County Farm Museum, 954 England Creamery Rd., Rising Sun, MD 21911.
