Ronald O. Bramble
Retired Police Sergeant and Volunteer Fireman
Mr. Ronald O. Bramble, age 76, of Newark, DE, passed away quietly in his sleep on Friday, June 4, 2010, at his daughters home, with his family and companion by his bedside.
Ron was born to the late Norman Bramble and Helen Davis Bramble, in Newark, DE, on June 13, 1933. He grew up playing sports, excelling as a baseball player, and was signed by the Philadelphia Phillies in 1950. His dreams of playing professional ball ended however, when he joined the Marines to proudly serve his country during the Korean War. A tireless public servant, Ron dedicated his life to helping others. He made his career with the Newark Police Department as a police officer. While serving in the department, Ron was responsible for the arrest of a person on the FBIs ten-most wanted list. He retired at the rank of sergeant in 1976 after 22 years of service. Ron also bravely served as a volunteer firefighter with Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder Fire Company for 50 years. During his retirement, he worked as a bus driver for the Christina School District Autistic Program.
Ron married his late wife, Betty Linton Bramble, on Valentines Day of 1959, and together, they settled down to raise their family in Newark. He was an active member of his community, serving in many elected positions in the East End Civic Association and volunteered his time as a coach for numerous girls softball teams. He was a Mason and a member at the Hiram Lodge #25 in Newark. A passionate lover of life, Ron enjoyed gardening, all types of car racing, and collecting antiques. He was a devoted Philadelphia sports fan, who enjoyed rooting for the Eagles, Phillies, and Flyers. Ron also greatly enjoyed relaxing at his beach house in Ocean City, MD. A self-proclaimed foodie, Ron appreciated all types of cuisine. Above all, he was a dedicated family man, who absolutely loved and adored spending time with his grandchildren.
Ron was predeceased by his beloved wife, Betty, and a sister, Norma Reuwer. He is survived by 2 daughters; Diane R. Bramble and partner, Rhonda Kimble, of Boulder, CO, and Donna K. Evans of Newark, DE; a sister, Ruth Crowe of Newark, DE; his grandchildren, Rebecca and Sayer Evans; companion, Virginia Ginger Zlock, of Townsend, DE; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 5 pm to 7 pm on Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 W. Park Place, Newark. A second visitation will be held on Thursday, June 10, 2010 from 9:45 am to 10:45 am at the Aetna Fire Hall, 400 Ogletown Road, Newark, where a Masonic service will be held at 10:45 am, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 am. Interment will follow in Newark M.E. Cemetery, Chapel and New Streets, Newark.
