Ronald R. Nichols

Mr. Ronald R. Nichols, age 70, of New Castle, DE, and Pot Nets in Millsboro, DE, died on Monday, June 14, 2010, at Heartland Hospice House in Wilmington.

A native Delawarean, Mr. Nichols was born in Wilmington on September 7, 1939, son of the late Ernest R. Nichols and Mary E. Willoughby Nichols. He proudly served his country in the US Marine Corps and later made his professional career with the Delaware Department of Education, where he retired as the Executive Director of the Data Service Center in 1996 after 31 years of service. Following his retirement, he worked at his fun job at Manor Ace Hardware for several years.

A leader in his community, Mr. Nichols was a longtime member of Asbury U.M. Church, the Loyal Order of Moose #1587 in New Castle, AMVETS in Millsboro, and Joseph B. Stahl Post #30 American Legion in New Castle. In his leisure hours, he greatly enjoyed woodworking and gardening around his home, as well as fishing and crabbing.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Lois-Anne Smith Nichols; children, Ronald R. Nichols, Jr. (companion, Lori Brown) of Bear, DE; Glenn H. Nichols (Maureen) of Bear, DE; and Lori A. Nichols-Davis (fianc, Richard J. Clough) of Newport, DE; sisters, Patricia M. Bodan (Stanley) of Elsmere, DE; Linda J. Smith of Wilmington, DE; and Faye J. Taylor of Middletown, DE; grandchildren, Robert L. Davis, Jr., Joseph E. Nichols, Sara L. Davis, Adam R. Nichols, Brooke D. Nichols, Amanda L. Nichols, and Rose A. Clough; and great grandchildren, Savanna S. Clough and Angel J. Clough.

Visitation will be held from 6 pm to 8 pm on Thursday, June 17, 2010, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE. A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Friday, June 18, 2010, at the funeral home, where visitation will be held again after 10 am. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Nichols may be made to Asbury U.M. Church, 300 E. Basin Road, New Castle, DE 19720.
