Roy Randall Downward, Sr.

Born October 7, 1941

Roy Randall Downward, Sr., age 74, of Clayton, DE, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 10, 2016.

A native Delawarean, Roy was born in Minquadale on October 7, 1941, and was a son of the late Frank M. and Catherine M. (Bowers) Downward. He proudly served his country as a member of the Delaware Army National Guard. A heavy equipment operator by trade, Roy made his career with New Castle County, dedicating 30 years of service.

Known for his handyman skills, he enjoyed working around the house and tinkering with anything needing his special touch. Whether they were at the beach, camping, fishing or just sitting around the fire pit at home, Roy’s greatest joy in life was spending time with his family. He looked forward to visiting his brother and niece’s home in St. Michaels, MD where they could catch up, share a few drinks and watch the boats go by. A devoted husband, loving father, beloved brother and adoring grandfather, Roy will be missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Patricia (Birney) Downward; sons, Brian C. Downward, Sr., Roy R. Downward, Jr. (Tabitha) and Earl L. Downward (Kristy) all of Clayton, DE; daughter, Valerie D. Camacho (Christopher) of Dover, DE; brother, Eugene Downward, Sr. (Grace) of New Castle, DE; sister, Mary Lou Fox of Middletown, DE; 17 grandchildren; and a large extended family.

A memorial service will be held at 4 pm on Wednesday afternoon, February 17, 2016, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a visitation for family and friends will be held from 3 pm until 4 pm. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Roy’s memory may be made to Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.
