Sherwood Russell Neil, age 87, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 22, 2016.

Born in Meyersdale, PA on September 16, 1928, Neil was a son of the late Conrad and Ruth (Weaver) Neil. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Neil owned and operated a grocery store with his wife in Johnstown, PA in the late 1950’s. A talented auto mechanic by trade, he made his career with the Brookside Exxon station, retiring in 1995.

He was a longtime and active member of Ogletown Baptist Church in Newark. Neil enjoyed spending time outdoors gardening and working in his yard. A loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and brother, he was happiest in the company of his family.

In addition to his parents, Neil was preceded in death by his brother, William Neil and sister, Betty Kelly. He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Peggy Lou (Geesey) Neil; children, Gary Neil (Linda) of Newark, DE, David Neil (Carolyn) of Landenberg, PA, Daniel Neil (Karen) of Newark, DE, Paul Neil (Karen) of Wilmington, DE and Jennifer Griffith of Milford, DE; brother, Elsworth Neil of Lititz, PA; sisters, Janet Beam of WA and Lois Berkstresser of OH; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Tuesday morning, February 2, 2016, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE, where a visitation will be held from 10 am until 11 am. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 92 Read’s Way, Ste. 205, New Castle, DE 19720.

  • Hi Peggy,

    Was sadly surprised when I heard of Sherwood’s passing. He was a true friend as are you. I knew he was having problems but I didn’t realize they were so serious. You two have been a great support to me and my career for a long time. I will miss him and our great conversations. They were one of a kind, but truthful. I know now he is in a better place with NO pain.
