Sonia Sywy Bittell, Retired R.N.

Sonia Sywy Bittell, age 83, of New Castle, DE, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 22, 2013.
Born in Wilmington, Delaware on January 20, 1930, Sonia was a daughter of the late John and Taklia Sywy. She was a member of Wilmington High School’s Class of 1948. Sonia later attended the Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1953. She made her career as a registered nurse with the Medical Center of Delaware, retiring after many years of dedicated service.
Active in the volunteer fire service community since 1960, Sonia was a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Wilmington Manor Fire Company. She enjoyed attending bingo nights with friends. Above all else, she was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She will be dearly missed.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the nurses, doctors, and staff of Seasons Hospice for the compassionate care they provided to Sonia during her illness.
In addition to her parents, Sonia was preceded in death by her infant son, Donald A. Bittell; brothers, Stephen, Theodore, and John Sywy; sister, Rose Sywy; and daughter-in-law, Mary Bittell. She is survived by her children, Asher J. Bittell, Jr. of New Castle, DE; Rose Lynn Snyder and husband Frank of Clayton, DE; and David A. Bittell of Lewes, DE; 3 grandsons, Frank, Billy, and David; and many dear friends, especially, Jackie Yaccarino, whom she considered a sister.
A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, November 27, 2013 at the Asbury United Methodist Church, 300 E. Basin Road, New Castle, DE, where friends may call from 9:30 am until 11 am. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE.

    To my beloved Aunt’s children, I know you have beautiful memories of your beloved Mom. She always had a special place in my heart. I was always glad to try and follow in her footsteps as an RN. God Bless you all.
