Noted Wrestling Coach
Mr. Steven Edward Catts, award-winning wrestling coach in Delaware and North Carolina, of Middletown, DE, died suddenly on Thursday, October 7, 2010. He was 41 years old.
Mr. Catts was a native Delawarean, born in Wilmington on July 7, 1969. Passionate about the sport of wrestling from his youth, he was a standout varsity wrestler at Salesianum High School, where he graduated in 1987. Following his graduation from James Madison University with a degree in finance, he returned to Delaware and accepted a position as an assistant wrestling coach for Mt. Pleasant High School and later A.I. DuPont High School. Known by students and sports colleagues alike for his unique gifts as a skilled coach and a patient mentor, he was named Assistant Coach of the Year by the State of Delaware while at A.I. DuPont.
After moving to North Carolina, Mr. Catts served as the assistant wrestling coach at J.H. Rose High School in Greenville. His concern for nurturing the talents of young wrestlers led him to co-found the Greenville Wrestling Club, with the aim of providing athletes from 4 years of age through high school with the valuable, fundamental instruction needed to help them excel in wrestling and in life. For his unmatched dedication and enviable record of meet successes, he was honored by his fellow coaches in 2009 as one of North Carolinas Wrestling Coaches of the Year.
In his rare leisure hours, Mr. Catts was an avid hunter, fisherman, and sports fan. Since June of this year, he had been employed with Corporation Services Company (CSC) in Wilmington.
He is survived by his parents, William L.Catts and Bonnie J. Veazey Catts of Middletown; sister, Leslie A. Catts of Middletown; nephew, Eric C. Catts; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 6 pm on Wednesday, October 13, 2010, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions in memory of Mr. Catts be made to the Greenville Wrestling Club, 104 Woodstock Dr., Greenville, NC 27834.
