Susan E. Carter

Born February 1, 1952

Susan E. Carter, 64, of Delaware City, peacefully passed away surrounded by her loved ones at her residence on Sunday, May 29th.

Born February 1, 1952 in Wilmington, she was a lifelong resident of Delaware City. She graduated from Gunning Bedford High School in 1970, where she was proudly involved with the drama club. Susan attended Harris Career Institute and became a certified Nurse’s Aide. She also trained as a dog groomer and often groomed dogs as a hobby. She worked at Governor Bacon Health Center and Connection CSP, Inc. as a psycho-geriatric technician. She also worked for MBNA as a machine operator in the mail room. In all of her positions she took pride in her work, and truly cared for those around her. Susan’s hobbies included sewing, drawing and writing. She was strong in her faith, and was known to family and friends for her quick wit and way with words. She wrote poetry and short stories, and had a bible quote appropriate for any situation. Her family was important to her. She loved going out to breakfast or sitting on the picnic bench talking with them. She loved nature, the beach and her Lord. Many people came to know Him because of her. And she loved to sing!

Susan was predeceased by her parents Thomas J Heeren and Rachel F Catts and her sister Bonnie (Heeren) Schirling. She is survived by her daughter Shannon D. Carter of Newark, her granddaughter Rachel Kerrin Carter, also of Newark, and her beloved dog Tanner. They were the source of her greatest joys and blessings. She is also survived by her brothers Daniel Heeren (Linda) of Middletown and Robert Heeren of Delaware City. She also leaves her sisters-in-love Kandace Boone (Art) of Townsend, Kristie Yarnall (Jerry) of Newark, and Karen Carter (Greg) of Leander, TX. Missing her are also 12 nieces and nephews and 24 great-nieces and nephews. She also had a special relationship with her ex-husband and his wife Wayne and Marianne Carter of Middletown. There is also a host of wonderful lifelong friends who will miss her. Susan loved people and it was often said that her family tree was more of a vine because friends became family.

Services will be held Friday afternoon, June 3, 2016 from 2-3pm at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 214 Clinton St, Delaware City, DE 19706. Friends are welcome for visitation from 1-2pm. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Faithful Friends (302) 427-8514, ext. 110, or Paralyzed Veterans Association – Colonial Chapter (888) 963-6595.
