Therese M. Schaffer, age 83, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 29, 2016, at her residence.

Born in Yardley, PA on December 19, 1932, Mrs. Schaffer was a daughter of the late James R. and Edna (Borden) Marion. She owned and operated Honey Bear Child Care in Newark, serving countless families until her retirement in 1983.

A woman of strong faith, Mrs. Schaffer was a longtime parishioner of Holy Family R.C. Church in Newark where she served as past president of the Altar Society and was a member of the Secular Franciscan Order. She gave of her time as a volunteer with the Little Sisters of the Poor for many years. Above all else, Mrs. Schaffer was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother who adored spending time with her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Schaffer. Mrs. Schaffer is survived by her sons, Edward Schaffer (Diane) of Pulaski, VA, Frank Schaffer (Audrey) of Newark, Joseph Schaffer (Carole) of Rockville, MD and James Schaffer of Newark; siblings, Joseph Marion and Agnes Schreck, both of Levittown, PA; 6 grandchildren; and 7 great grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 am on Wednesday morning, October 5, 2016, at Holy Family R.C. Church, E. Chestnut Hill and Gender Roads, Newark, DE, where a visitation will be held from 10 am until 11 am. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Little Sisters of the Poor, 185 Salem Church Road, Newark, DE 19713.

  • Praying for your family. I saw the tau cross and figured Theresa was a Franciscan, a loving and caring group of people. Therese will be greeted by her Franciscan family along with her Maker.

  • I met Therese at the St. Patrick Fraternity of the Order of Franciscans Secular. She was most strong, joy-filled, and ever-faithful to God despite all the losses in her life. I will always remember her as a person of Faith and Hope, and filled with God’s Love.
