Thomas L. Nowland, Jr.
Mr. Thomas L. Nowland, Jr., age 83, of Delaware City, DE, died on Thursday, July 29, 2010, at his home.
Born in Wilmington on September 7, 1926, Mr. Nowland was the son of the late Thomas L. Nowland, Sr. and Ethel Bird Nowland. He proudly served his country in the US Marine Corps during World War II. In civilian life, he made his career with the Chrysler Corporation in Newark, where he worked for 35 years until his retirement as the companys fire marshal in 1988. He also maintained a family farm on his property for many years and owned winning Thoroughbred race horses.
Active in his community, Mr. Nowland was a member of the New Castle Moose Lodge, the Delaware City Recreation Club, and American Legion Post 13. In earlier years, during his residence in St. James City, FL, he had been a member of the Elks Club in Pine Island and the Pine Island Boat Club. He enjoyed many hobbies throughout his life including fishing, hunting, bowling, and dancing.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Irene Panchisin Nowland; son, Thomas L. Nowland III (Patricia) of Bear, DE; daughter, Kathy L. Lowe (fianc, Chucky Janiszewski) of Delaware City, DE; sisters, Elizabeth Betty Chambers and Jeanette Landers (Rennard) of West Chester, PA; grandsons, Michael and Matthew Lowe; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 11:30 am on Tuesday, August 3, 2010, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 214 Clinton Street, Delaware City, DE, where visitation will begin at 10 am. Interment will follow in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.
