Tom M. Hannan, age 96, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 1, 2017.

Born in Huntington, WV on August 12, 1920, Tom was the son of the late Charles and Edith (Nibert) Hannan. He proudly served his country during WWII as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. A career salesman, Tom worked for the Exxon Company until his retirement. After retirement, he worked for Burns and McBride.

Tom was an avid boater and loved spending time in the open waters. He was a loyal fan of both the University of Delaware football and basketball teams. Above all else, Tom adored spending time with his beloved family, all of whom will miss him greatly.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Stephen G. Hannan; stepson, William Newnam; and brothers, Raymond and Malcolm Hannan. Tom is survived by his loving wife of 13 years, Helen Newnam Hannan; son, Thomas M. Skip Hannan (Martha) of Fredericksburg, VA and their children, Katherine Fisher of Richmond, VA and Geoffrey Hannan of San Diego, CA; stepson, Frank Newnam (Yvette) of Torrance, CA; stepdaughter, Cherie Newnam Bischoff (Bruce) of Holland, OH; brother, Dr. J. Richard Hannan (Betty); 7 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.

The family gives special thanks to the staff at Rockland Place, especially Tom’s caregiver Shawnee and to the staff of Heartland Hospice Care, especially Nurse Julianna.

A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Saturday morning, March 18, 2017 at the Immanuel Episcopal Church on the Green, Second and Harmony Streets, New Castle, DE. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Heartland Hospice Care, 256 Chapman Rd., Suite 102, Newark , DE 19702 and the Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8517.
