Violet R. Madora

September 17, 1922 - January 29, 2017

Violet R. Madora, age 94, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully at the Delaware Veterans Home in Milford, DE on January 29, 2017, in the presence of her loving family.

Born in McAdoo, PA on September 17, 1922, she was a daughter of the late Edward and Jenny (Kalinowski) Glezman. Known affectionately as Glez, Violet was a graduate of McAdoo High School. She received a scholarship to attend the Delaware State Hospital Nursing School in Wilmington, DE, where she graduated first in her class, received her diploma, passed the Delaware State Boards and became a Registered Nurse in 1944. Upon graduation, Glez immediately joined the U. S. Army, where she received a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant and served as an Army Nurse in World War II. After the war, she periodically worked as a Registered Nurse at the Delaware State Hospital while married to the love of her life, the late Albert W. Madora, as they raised five children. Her family was always her priority, and her hobbies included cooking, music, singing, shopping and traveling.

Glez was predeceased by eight siblings, and survived by her five children, Albert J. Madora (Pat) of Montclair VA, William F. Madora (Donna) of Lewes DE, Christine Mercante (John) and Michele Wilson, both of Wilmington DE, and Thomas P. Madora (Renee) of Newark, DE; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren.

Friends may call from 9:30 to 10:30 AM on Friday, February 3, 2017, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 345 Bear-Christiana Road, Bear, where she and her husband were among the founders of the parish church. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered there at10:30 am followed by interment in All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mrs. Madora’s name may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, 399 Market St., Ste. 102, Philadelphia, PA 19106; American Macular Degeneration Foundation, P.O. Box 515, Northampton, MA 01061-0515; and Delaware Veterans Home, 100 Delaware Veterans Blvd., Milford, DE 19963.

    Sincere condolences to all of you.
    We went to St. Peter parochial school together; I don’t remember your Mom but have fond memories of your Dad sitting in the front pew at Sunday Mass, Fr. White giving the sermon & Mr. Madora reading the Sun. paper in the front pew. Since Fr. White wasn’t shy about confronting people, I was always surprised he never said anything. Hope you don’t mind my sharing…….
