Virginia B. Bennett, age 87, of New Castle, DE, passed away peacefully, in the comfort of her home, surrounded by her loving family, on Thursday, April 13, 2017.

Virginia was born in Lansing, NC on August 12, 1929, and was the daughter of the late Lester and Villar (Barr) Gilley. A talented homemaker, she devoted her life to caring for her family.

Virginia loved shopping with her sister at the mall and was an avid reader. She cherished spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, whom she adored. A beloved mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother, Virginia will be greatly missed.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Conley J. Bennett and daughter, Robin DiMartino. Virginia is survived by her children, Maureen Snow (Ron) of Greenwood, James C. Bennett (Valerie) of Newark, Michael Bennett of Bear, Kim Bennett of Millsboro and Lisa Zuvich (John) of New Castle; siblings, Rene Lovejoy of Bear, Ted Gilley of Lansing, NC and Ned Gilley of Baltimore, MD; grandchildren, Sheila, Jamie, James, Charla, Jasen, Tiffany, Brooke, Cody and Mia; and great grandchildren, Sydney, Spencer, Brayden, Orion, Chase, Cole, Rylyn, Reese, Brynleigh and Conley.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Tuesday evening, April 18, 2017 at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE, where a funeral service will begin at 7:00 pm. A committal service will be held at 10:00 am on Wednesday, April 19, 2017, in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 92 Read’s Way, Suite 205, New Castle, DE 19720.

  • VA as she was called was a wonderful person and sister to Ned her brother and all the family, we will all miss her and hope she will rest in heaven.
