Virginia E. (Jean) Wilkinson

Born August 6, 1927

Virginia E. (Jean) Wilkinson, age 88, of New Castle, DE, passed away on Monday, October 19, 2015, surrounded by her family.

Jean was born in Pleasantville, NJ on August 6, 1927, daughter of the late Millard B. Hartman and Ethel Risley Hartman. She was a wonderful wife of 41 years to the late William Wilkinson, Sr. and a loving mother to her children, William, Jr. (Linda) of Odessa, DE, Allen L. and James J. of New Castle, DE and Cheryle A. Flanigan (James) of Odessa, DE.

Jean worked briefly at Mellon Bank in the credit card department. She was a very talented seamstress and enjoyed camping, crossword and jigsaw puzzles and cooking. Jean’s greatest joy was spending time with her many family members and most recently with her first great great granddaughter, April.

In addition to her children, she is survived by her sister, Ruth Taylor of Egg Harbor Township, NJ; 12 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; 1 great great granddaughter; daughter-in-law, Donna Wilkinson; and many in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins in the South Jersey area.

Jean’s family would like to thank the staff at Cadia Rehabilitation at Broadmeadow in Middletown, where she was a resident for 15 months, as well as the staff at Christiana Care Hospital Unit 5A for their kindness and care and also the teams at Seasons Hospice and Heartland Hospice for their guidance and care during Mom’s final days.

A funeral service will be held at 1 pm on Friday afternoon, October 23, 2015 at the Asbury United Methodist Church, 300 E. Basin Road, New Castle, DE, where a visitation for family and friends will be held from 11 am until 1 pm. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE.

  • She was the best Motherinlaw ever. I loved spending time with her doing pies and going out to lunch and dinner. Her passion was her family. And to the very end worried for some. She will be soooo missed. The end of an era.

  • Although we only met once or twice we have been neighbors of your daughter Cheryle, son in law Jimmy who are so dear friends to us for 13 years and neighbors to your son Billy and daughter in law Linda who have also been close to our hearts.
