W. Jean Harmon - Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Homes & Crematory

W. Jean Harmon

Born April 29, 1940

W. Jean Harmon, age 76, longtime resident of St. Georges, DE, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours on Tuesday, June 21, 2016. The world lost an amazing, opinionated, hard-headed, willful, beautiful, sparkly, loving, wonderful woman, in Jeanne!! It had recently been said that she was impossible to forget and once she knew you she knew you forever!! She would make you feel like you were her best friend and the most important person in the world! What a legacy!! She will be missed by many and never forgotten. She fought hard for a very long time and knew when she was too tired to fight any more!! Quality of life was way more important to her than quantity. Look out heaven, with her glitter on her halo and sparkly wings. Rest well!!

A native Delawarean, Jean was born in Wilmington on April 29, 1940, and was the daughter of the late John C. and Bonnie W. (Walker) Harmon. She was a graduate of Middletown High School and later proudly served her country as a member of the U.S. Navy WAVES from 1958 until 1962. During her military service, Jean received career training at the Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD and after her honorable discharge, accepted a position as a physical therapist with the Delaware Curative Workshop where she worked for the next 38 years.

She was a longtime member of the St. Georges Historical Society, the Mae Hightower Vandamm Society and St. Georges United Methodist Church. Jean enjoyed visiting the Playhouse Theater, needlepoint, reading, collecting old photos of St. Georges, hosting parties and sitting poolside. Her motto to live by was, Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, champagne in one hand, strawberries in the other; body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, while screaming “ ˜Woo-Hoo! What a ride!’

Jean is survived by her brother and best friend, John “Jack” W. Harmon also of St. Georges, DE; many befriended children; and many special friends whom she considered family.

A funeral service will be held at 12 Noon on Monday, June 27, 2016, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a visitation will be held from 10:30 am until 12 Noon. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Jean’s memory may be made to the St. Georges United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 145, St. Georges, DE 19733.

  • Still doesn’t seem real that you are not here with us. I know you are with Mom-Mom Bonnie now and that the two of you are watching over me. You are such an important part of my life and your legacy will live forever. Thank you for helping my parents raise me and shaping me into the person I am today. You were a mom, best friend, Grandmom and godmother to my family. I love you!!

  • My heart aches so much I don’t have the words. Jeanne welcomed me on my first day as the new executive director at DCW 15 years ago and she has been my loving friend since that very day. I have never known and will never know another like her. She taught me so much about life, she made me a better person, she inspired me. She was my friend, my sister, my mother, anything and everything you could be blessed to have in a friend. She touched me deeply and so many countless others with her life and love and spirit. If there ever was a life well lived and worthy of celebrating it is Jeanne’s. I will miss her so greatly but I just know she is up there with her boa feathers around her neck, glitter on her halo and sequins on her wings. Until we meet again my dear friend, Love you.

  • Jeanne, what an inspiration and lively person you were on this earth. No matter what pain you were experiencing, you always got into that Massage Chair and laughed, joked, and gave advice with a smile. Thanks for the M&M’s and the nudge to eat them on Monday, June 20th… the day before your crossing on a Beautiful Summer Solstice Day. Try your best to straighten out heaven and give it some fun laughs too! Miss you and so glad to know your Beautiful Spirit. Lots of Love always… your Friend and Massage Therapist, Joan Gennarini.

  • Jeanne was unique!! Great friend, generous, living on her terms! Shy she said…but she never met a stranger!! I feel fortunate she came into my life. We shared years of wonderful adventures!

  • My deepest sympathy and Prayers for the Harmon Family and Friends for their loss. I was stationed at NAS PAX River Maryland Station Hospital with Jeanne 59-61. Jeanne was a warm, caring, and loving person with a great sense of humor. I will miss our re-kindled e-mail friendship these past years since leaving the Navy. Rest in Peace, dear friend, Jeanne

  • We are deeply saddened with the news of Jeanne passing. My mom went to the St. Georges United Methodist church for quite a few years. I had Jeanne as my first ever physical therapist and she was the absolute best. She never failed to speak to us when we were seen in town. This was a very special lady will always have a special place in our hearts.

  • We now live in Virginia but wanted to be able to send our condolences on the passing of Jeanne’s death. We was a tremendously special lady. Hopefully she will rest in peace.

  • My deepest condolence to the Harmon family.Jeanne’s bubbly personality and zest for life will forever inspire me to live life to the fullest. Jeanne made me feel welcome when I joined Delaware Curative Workshop and she made it a point to stop by my private practice office regularly. I will miss her kindness and friendship and her Christmas cards keeping me updated on her condition. Rest in peace Jeanne!

  • I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I too have lost family members and know this can be one of the most difficult things to go through. I just wanted to leave you with a scripture that has helped me and let you know your family will be in my prayers. The scripture is Acts 24:15 and it talks about a hope of a resurrection when we could see our loved ones again.

  • My sincere condolences to the Harmon family for the lost of Jeanne. Please continue to let God’s Word comfort and guide you. Isaiah 55:11,Psalms 37:10,11,29

  • The sad news reached me through word of mouth. Realizing the end was near.

During our years at the Delaware Curative Workshop, it was Jeanne with her ‘forever’ smile, who helped make me to be comfortable, when new, as PT (strait from the Netherlands) I learned the ropes.

In later years Jean made sure I would stay in touch with a large group of retired staff.

Never thanked her enough. Memories stay! Hetty

  • So sorry to hear of Jeanne’s passing, Please know that our thought’s & prayers are with the Harmon Family.

  • Just heard of Jeanie’s passing. My prayers and condolences to all of her family and friends at this sad time. I have found memories of spending time in Bethany with Jeanie and my family. When I think of my home I think St Georges and when I think of St Georges I think of Jeanie!
