Walter J. Comegys

Born April 15, 1925

Walter J. Comegys, age 90, of Middletown, formerly of Delaware City, passed away on April 21, 2015.

Walt was a native Delawarean; born in Milford, DE on April 15, 1925, son of the late Caesar Rodney Comegys and Pauline Sowada Comegys. He graduated from Caesar Rodney High School and went on to proudly serve his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War. He was in the following engagements during WWII: Saipan, Tinan, Leyte, and Luzon in the Philippines, and at Iwo Jima. He earned the following ribbons: Pacific Theater-4 stars, Philippine Liberation-2 stars, American Theater, Victory Medal, and National Defense Service Medal and Navy Occupation. He was a member of the Ebenezer United Methodist Church, Christiana Masonic Lodge, Robert L. Taylor Post #13 American Legion, Delaware City Lions Club and a life member of the Delaware City Recreation Club. Mr. Comegys served as a member of the Delaware City Town Council and several city boards. He was a deltiologist (post card collector), and enjoyed Delaware history and working on family genealogy. Walt loved to travel!

Walt is survived by his wife of 47 years, Beverly Cecil Comegys; sons, C. Rodney and wife, Meghan of Melbourne, Australia and James S. and wife, Jacqueline of Middletown, DE; granddaughters, Mackenzie, Callie and Kate; and grandson, Connor.

A funeral service will be held at 11am on Saturday, April 25, 2015 at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, where family and friends may visit from 9 am until 11 am. Interment will be at 10 am on Tuesday, April 28th at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE 19701.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Legion Robert L. Taylor Post #13, P.O. Box 277, Delaware City, DE 19706.

  • I didn’t know Walter was ill, and I am very sad to hear of his passing. He was the organizer behind all of our High School Graduation get togethers and will certainly be missed by all of us.
