Walter J. Thomas, age 81, of New Castle, DE, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 20, 2014.

Born in Maspeth, New York on May 27, 1933, Mr. Thomas was a son of the late George and Mary Ament Thomas. He honorably served his country as a member of the Army National Guard for 23 years. Mr. Thomas made his career as a maintenance foreman with the former North American Smelting Company and would later accept a position with the Wilmington Finishing Company, where he worked until his retirement in 2003.

Active in his community, he gave of his time and talents as a longtime volunteer at Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children. He enjoyed camping, fishing, crabbing, gardening and also repairing things.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Thomas was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nancy Lee Scheier Thomas; 2 brothers, Charles Thomas and Eugene Thomas; and 3 sisters, Marie Thomas, Maddelin Smith and Verna Darris. He is survived by his children, Deborah L. Finnegan of Acworth, GA, Jeff W. Thomas of Wilmington, DE, Keith C. Thomas of New Castle, DE and Patricia L. Stewart of Middletown, DE; 5 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 7 pm on Monday, November 24, 2014 at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. duPont Parkway, New Castle. Interment will be at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear at a later date.

  • I”m sorry for the loss of your dear and precious Walter, you are not alone, and may you be encouraged from knowing that by means of God’s Kingdom under Jesus Christ rulership, we will get to see our loved ones again. (John 5:28,29) And just think of how wonderful it will be when we will never have to die at all.!!!
    Revelation 21:4 says “And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain anymore. The former things have passed away.”
    This is a future prospect for all those who love righteousness. Psalms 37:29 says “The righteous will possess the earth, And they will live forever on it.”
