Walter Stokaylo

Mr. Walter Stokaylo, age 86, of New Castle, DE, died on Thursday, April 15, 2010. Born in Old Forge, PA, on November 15, 1923, Mr. Stokaylo was the son of the late Theodore Stokaylo and Pauline Krewko Stokaylo. He grew up in New York City, where he graduated from Textile High School, enlisted in the US Merchant Marine in January 1942, and graduated as an ensign from Merchant Marine Officers School in April 1944 with a specialty as a steam and diesel engineer. During his military career, he served in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Mediterranean-Middle East war zones aboard the famed Liberty Ships that were converted to troop carriers for the Sicily and Normandy invasions. In 1947, Mr. Stokaylo accepted a position with Tidewater Oil (later Getty Oil) as a ships engineer and chief engineer in the companys marine department. He transferred to the Delaware refinery in 1966, where he retired as an inspection engineer in 1985 after a 38-year career. Among his many hobbies, he greatly enjoyed gardening around his home and working in his basement machine/woodworking shop. Over the years, he handcrafted numerous ships lamps and other decorative and unique items from materials found in marine salvage yards. He also built several highly detailed sailing ship models, one of which was on display for two years in the Newport News Naval Museum. He is survived by his beloved wife, Letty L. Goretsky Wilson Stokaylo; children, James Wilson of New Castle, DE; Susan Ricksgers of Traverse City, MI; and Lois Campbell of Hernando, FL; and 6 grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Theodore Stokaylo. A funeral service will be held at 11:30 am on Tuesday, April 20, 2010, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where visitation will begin at 10:30 am. Interment will be in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.
