Willard J. “Woody” Dougherty, Sr.
Born July 5, 1944
Willard J. Woody Dougherty, Sr., age 69, of Rising Sun, MD passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, May 17, 2014.
Born on July 5, 1944 in Wilmington, DE, he was the son of the late George Dougherty and Esther Hindes Dougherty.
Woody (as he was affectionately known by many) retired from Stroehmann Bakeries in New Castle, DE after many years of dedicated service.

As a family man, Woody loved spending time attending various family gatherings including crab feast picnics. He loved spending his vacations going on cruises & people watching on the boardwalk at the beach. In his spare time, Woody enjoyed reading western novels, watching action & western movies, attending antique car shows, and watching the Discovery & History channels. He was an avid fan of both Elvis and John Wayne. In his earlier years, Woody enjoyed hunting trips, & over the years he never lost his eye for the outdoors.
Woody will be remembered as a fun-loving jokester who was kind hearted, yet very ornery! He will be GREATLY missed by the many lives he touched.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Karen Long Dougherty in 1997.
Woody leaves many fond memories to his 7 children, Willard J. Dougherty, Jr. (Danielle) of Middletown, George S. Dougherty (Stacey) of Newark, Willis O. Dougherty (Debbie) of Nottingham, PA, Christina L. Littleton (Sherman) of Georgetown; Charlotte Heath of Wilmington, Thomas Heath (Michelle) of Elkton, MD and Krissy Duncan of Rising Sun, MD; 4 siblings, George Dougherty, Hedy Davis, Bill Dougherty and Tim Dougherty, all of Newark; his first wife and dear friend, Betty Beaumont of Georgetown; 12 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday morning, May 24, 2014 at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 W. Park Place, Newark, DE, where friends may visit with his family from 9:30 until 10:30 am. Interment will follow in Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Cherry Hill, MD.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Woody’s memory to the Loyal Order of the Moose No. 851, 71 Cherry Hill Road, Elkton, MD 21921.

An Angel whispered
take my hand and
come with me
you’re work here is done.
I went away to a place
where there’s no tears, nor sorrow
only laughter and smiles,
there will always be a Tomorrow.
As I move amongst the clouds.
I’ll look down and smile upon you,
while the angels
sing a heavenly song.
I am not alone
all who went before
are here
they awaited my return.
I know you’ll grieve
and wish I was still here
I am here in the memories
you hold dear.
Remember how much I
love you
and know I took your
love with me.
I did not wish for
you to cry, nor feel sad.
My pain is gone and
I am Free!
Soon you’ll come to me
until then
God will be with you
Just as He’s with me.
