Mr. William B. Porter, Jr., known fondly as “Bill,” age 59, of Newark, DE, formerly of Franklinville, NJ, passed away on Wednesday, August 21, 2013.
Mr. Porter was born in Philadelphia and proudly served his country in the US Air Force during the Vietnam War. In civilian life, he began his career with the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, working his way to foreman. He later accepted a position there as a career counselor, remaining until the shipyard was deactivated in 1996. Mr. Porter then went to work for FEMA from 1996 until 1998, and it was there that he met his wife. He was later employed as a network administrator with the Securities and Exchange Commission in Philadelphia, where he retired.
A knowledgeable and avid history buff throughout his life, Mr. Porter was widely admired as an expert in military history. He read widely on many military topics and greatly enjoyed movies and documentaries about the Civil War. He was also experienced in all facets of computer technology and delighted in testing new applications.
He was preceded in death by his father, William Porter, Sr. He is survived by his beloved wife of 14 years, Yvette D. Bellamy Porter; son, Justin Porter; daughter, Meghan Heard; mother, Regina Porter; brother, Gregory Porter and wife Mary; sisters, Penny Koebernik, Joyce Porter, and Joanne Cuff and husband Albert; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A funeral service will be held at 11:30 am on Friday, August 30th, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE, where visitation will begin at 10:30 am. Interment will follow in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.
