William Dawe

William Dawe, age 88, of Delaware City, DE, passed away peacefully at home, while surrounded by his family, on Sunday, September 17, 2017.

William was born in Albany, NY on June 27, 1929. He proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Army. A career seaman, William spent 38 years in the field working for Tidewater, Getty, and Texaco prior to his retirement.

Active in his community, he was a 45-year life member of the Delaware City Fire Company and a 37-year member of American Legion Post No. 13 in Delaware City. An avid sports fan, William enjoyed cheering on his two favorite teams each season “ the New York Yankees and the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. He was a talented artist and spent many happy hours creating beautiful oil paintings. Above all else, William adored spending time with his loved ones and looked forward to family get togethers. He will be dearly missed by all.

William was preceded in death by his wife, Leta May Hallett Dawe and 3 step sons. He is survived by his step children, Henry Hallett (Rose) of Elkton, MD, Peter Hallett (Ann) of Delaware City, Clifford Hallett (Arlene) of Delaware City, and Ivor Hallett (Terri) of Bear; step daughters, Shirley Williams of Newark, Margaret Moore of New Castle, and Hazel Baranowski (Felix) of New Castle; and many extended family members.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Wednesday evening, September 20, 2017, at the Delaware City Fire Company, 815 5th Street, Delaware City, DE. A second visitation will be held from 11:00 am until 11:30 am on Thursday morning, September 21, 2017, at the fire company, where a funeral service will follow at 11:30 am. Interment with military honors will follow in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Delaware City Fire Company, P.O. Box 251, Delaware City, DE 19706.

  • We always knew him as “Billy.” It was a joy to have had him as a member of our extended family. When I was a kid Billy was traveling the world as a merchant seaman, which was soooo cool! He had a kind heart and even though we didn’t have frequent contact, his holiday calls will be missed.
