William Howard Shifflett, Sr.

Born: 12/22/1928
Died: 3/27/2013

William Howard Shifflett, Sr., known fondly as “Poppy,” age 84, of New Castle, DE, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 27, 2013.
Howard was born in Charlottesville, VA, on December 22, 1928, son of the late Reuben D. Shifflett and Ann V. Mowbray Shifflett. After retiring from Westvaco Corporation in Newark, DE, in 1990, he and his wife moved to Capon Bridge, WV. In his healthy years, he enjoyed bowling, helping his wife with her crafts, gardening, and fishing. Later, he found joy in singing karaoke with all the new friends he met in West Virginia, where he affectionately (and quickly) became known as the “King of Karaoke.” He was also an avid New York Yankees fan.
In addition to his parents, Howard was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years, Linda L. Brown Shifflett, who passed away in 2011; brothers, Grover, Russell, Raleigh, Mervin, and Malvin; sisters, Nina and Mary Shifflett, Virginia Haney, Margie Berry, and Christine Scott; grandson, Jared, son-in-law, Donny Walsh, and their beloved Pomeranian, Rusty. Left to cherish his memory are his sons, Thomas of Capon Bridge, WV, William Jr. of New Castle, DE, and Michael (wife Andrea) of Newark, DE; his daughter and caregiver, Judy Walsh of New Castle, DE; grandchildren, Thomas Jr., Jason, Gabrielle Remfrey, Matthew, Erin Sappington, and Billy Ayars (who was his fishing buddy for many, many summers in West Virginia); five great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
His daughter would especially like to thank his nurse, Rebecca Stier, for her tender, loving care and support, as well as the entire staff of Heartland Home Care and Hospice. The family also expresses their gratitude to the staff of First State Dialysis. Thank you all so much.
A funeral service will be held at 1 pm on Wednesday, April 3rd, at Haight Funeral Home, 6416 Sykesville Rd., Sykesville, MD, where visitation will begin at 11 am. Interment will follow in Linthicum Chapel Cemetery, Clarksville, MD.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Heartland Home Care and Hospice, 256 Chapman Rd., Ste. 102, Newark, DE 19702.
