William J. “Bill” Yowell, Sr.

July 5, 1939 - May 19, 2017

William J. Bill Yowell, Sr., age 77, a lifelong resident of Delaware City,  passed away on Friday, May 19, 2017.

Born in Rising Sun, MD on July 5, 1939, he was the son of the  late John Thomas Yowell and Mary (Laramore) Yowell. Bill retired in September of 2016 as the Superintendent of housekeeping, maintenance, and security at Governor Bacon Health Center after 49 years of dedicated service.

Active in his community, he was a former president of Airport Speedway and the Delaware City Babe Ruth Baseball League for many years. Bill was also a member of Port Penn VFW Post 838, honorary member of the Delaware City Volunteer Fire Company, and a lifetime member of the Delaware City Recreation Club. Most of all, Bill was a devoted and loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and dear friend to many. He will be dearly missed by the many lives he has touched.

Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 20 years, Margaret M. Yowell and his son, Dennis Havens. He is survived by his children, Mary Laird (Dave), Bill J. Yowell, Jr. (Temple), Maggie Gray (Ray), Tricia Yowell (Ron), Robert Havens (Caroline), Anthony Havens (Corrine), Victor Havens, and Troy Havens (Tim Gibbs); sisters, Rose Yarbro and Shelby Cook (Richard); and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 6 pm to 8 pm on Tuesday evening, May 23, 2017 at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home of Delaware City, 214 Clinton Street, Delaware City, DE. A second visitation will be held from 10 am to 11 am on Wednesday morning, May 24, 2017 at the funeral home, where a funeral service will be held at 11 am. Interment will follow in Hickory Grove Cemetery, Port Penn Road, Port Penn, DE.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Governor Bacon Center, c/o Patient Fund, P.O. Box 559, Delaware City, DE 19706.
