Louis “Lou” Albertrani, age 67, of New Castle, DE, passed away suddenly on Saturday, July 13, 2024.

Born in Brooklyn, NY on March 21, 1957, he was a son of the late Anthony and Barbara (Abatemarco) Albertrani. Lou made his career in horse training and racing. He trained horses that won the Eclipse Award, multiple Graded Stakes winners, and trained the 1999 Breeder’s Cup and Sprint Champion, Artax. Lou was also a track official at Parx Racing.

In his free time, Lou loved to travel to new places. Most of all, he cherished the time he spent with his family.

Lou was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Barbara Albertrani. He is survived by his loving wife, Denise Albertrani; siblings, Tom Albertrani (Fonda) of Palm Harbor, FL, Mary Jo Salvato (Pete) of Farmingdale, NY, and Annette Beyer (Iggie) of West Islip, NY; and many nieces and nephews.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 11 am until 12 pm on Saturday, July 20, 2024, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 North DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 1 pm, following the visitation, at St. Paul Parish, 209 Washington Street, Delaware City, DE. Interment will be held privately.

  • Louie will be so very missed. He stay here was way too short and I’m so sorry for our lose. His smile and his laugh was always present. His life was so full and he accomplished so much to be proud of in his chosen field. Mostly I’ll remember him at all our family gatherings with his warmth and quick wit. He’ll always be in my prayers.

  • Louie was a great nephew of his Uncle Joey! Louie always called his uncle on special occasions and important dates in Uncle Joey’s life . He was always cheerful, cheerful and caring! Aunt Mary loved him as well. We will miss him !

  • Going to miss Lou so much. I loved seeing him every day at work and talking horses with him. He was one of the kindest people I ever met. He had such a deep love for horseracing and I loved hearing his stories. Lou you will be missed and I will never forget you!

  • Lou always had a positive attitude, which is often hard to maintain in the profession we chose. He loved his horses, and his family. Denise always provides great humor in any situation, and our prayers go out to her. Rest in peace, my friend.

  • Lou treated his horses and the people around as kindly as anyone could.
    He respected our sport and was one of the few trainers to wear a sport coat into the saddling paddock, even when saddling one of my slow horses.

  • Denise, James and I are so sorry to hear of the death of Lou. Both of you shared your kind and loving way with so many. Being with you in your home,having coffee and talking horses and or course roosters, and seeing Normans Rooster you purchased from Ginny at the auction,that Jim painted, is a wonderful memory for me. You remain in our prayers, and please know that Lou is at peace in the gentle hands of our Father. Jim and I will have a mass said for our friend, Lou.

  • Lou will be missed by his family and friends, especially the racing community. He loved his horses and enjoyed talking to everyone on the backstretch. We are very sad with the loss of our brother. He will be dearly missed.

I could just feel the laughter and joy in his greeting — “say hi to Dr. Anderson from Lou!” His positive attitude and work ethic was rare and will be sorely missed by all who knew him either in passing or every day.
