Andrew Joseph Donovan
Andy Donovan, age 28, of Newark, DE, died on Monday, January 2, 2012.
Andy was born in Newark and graduated from Newark High School, where he was a starter on the varsity soccer team for three years. He then graduated from the University of Delaware with degrees in both history and geography. With a keen mind and a passion for learning, Andy remained a student of history throughout his life, developing a deep understanding of the history and political landscape of Russia, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of geography and could cite even the most obscure locations from anywhere in the world. He enjoyed traveling and made trips to New Zealand, Australia, and Europe. Andy also had an extremely wry sense of humor and a quick wit.
A gifted musician, Andy enjoyed playing both bass guitar and saxophone. While at UD, he shared his musical talents as a member of the university’s well-regarded jazz ensemble.
He is survived by his parents, Dewey and Jane Donovan; brother, Jack Donovan; sister, Lexie Donovan; paternal grandfather, Kenneth Donovan; maternal grandfather, Joseph Spontak; and his pet dog, Zappa. He was preceded in death by his infant niece, Scarlett Donovan.
A memorial service will be held at 7 pm on Sunday, January 8, 2012, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Newark, 420 Willa Road, Newark, DE, 19711.
