Catherine C. “Cathy” Mathieson

October 24, 1929 - December 3, 2019

          Catherine C. “Cathy” Mathieson, age 90, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 3, 2019, surrounded by her loving family.

          Born in Preswick, Scotland on October 24, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Margaret McKean.  Cathy worked for Avon in Rye, NY.  She was later transferred to Newark, where she made a home with her husband and son, retiring after 23 years of service to Avon.  Following retirement, she and her husband enjoyed traveling, especially to Hawaii.

          Cathy had a kind heart and enjoyed volunteering at the Newark Senior Center for more than 20 years.  Her greatest accomplishment was receiving the Jefferson Award several times for her dedication and time.  Cathy took pride in everything she did for the senior center and cherished the many lifelong friends she made throughout the years.

          In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, William Mathieson.  Cathy is survived by her son, William Mathieson and his wife, Connie, with whom she lived; grandchildren, Kendra, Cassandra, Erin, Stephen and Joey; niece, Phyllis Rosenbaum (John); several great grandchildren; and many dear friends.

          A visitation for family and friends will be held from 2 pm until 3 pm on Wednesday, December 11, 2019, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE, where a memorial service will begin at 3 pm.  Interment will be held privately.

          In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Cathy’s memory to the Newark Senior Center, 200 Whitechapel Drive, Newark, DE 19713.

  • I I’m so sorry to read of Cathy’s passing. My husband and I both had the pleasure of working with her at Avon in Newark. She was genuine, friendly, helpful, and funny. I loved listening to her Scottish brogue with a touch of salty when she was annoyed… My condolences and prayers to her family and friends… RIP Cathy… Give Bobby a hug and a kiss from me when you see him.
