Mrs. Catherine F. Black, age 90, of Newark, DE, formerly of River Edge, NJ, passed away on Friday, August 24, 2012, at her home.
Born in Newburgh, NY, on July 24, 1922, Catherine was the daughter of the late Julius Froelich and Mary E. Murphy Froelich. She was employed with Gimbels Department Store in Paramus, NJ, and retired after 24 years of service. A devout Catholic throughout her life, Catherine shared her faith by supporting many charities, especially the Covenant House and St. Jude Children’s Hospital. She was a member of Holy Family parish in Newark, DE, and a former member of St. Peter’s parish in River Edge, NJ. Above all else, Catherine was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 60 years, William J. “Bill” Black, in 2009 and her sibilings, David and Elizabeth. Catherine is survived by her children, Kathryn Vasta and husband, Robert of Freehold, NJ, William J. Black, Jr. and wife, Kathy of Newark, DE, and Susan Maye and husband, Peter of Westwood, NJ; sister, Claire Vartain of Vero Beach, FL; grandchildren, Michael Bland, and wife, Heather and Liam and Jaclyn Black; and great grandchildren, Michaela and Finnleigh.
A visitiation will be held from 7 pm until 9 pm on Monday, August 27, 2012 at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 W. Park Place, Newark, DE. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 am on Tuesday, August 28, 2012 at Holy Family R.C. Church, E. Chestnut Hill and Gender Roads, Newark, DE. Entombment will be held at 11 am on Thursday, August 30, 2012 in All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Catherine’s name can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, Covenant House, Times Square Station, P.O.
