Born: 7/16/1924
Died: 5/31/2012
Mr. Clifton L. Burris, age 87, of New Castle, DE, passed away on Thursday, May 31, 2012.
Born in Chesapeake City, MD, on July 16, 1924, Mr. Burris was the son of the late James Thomas Burris and Ethel Jane Green Burris. He proudly served his country as a sergeant in the US Army working as a medic during World War II in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater. He would go on to a career in public service as a firefighter with the Wilmington Fire Department, retiring in 1973 after 21 years. He was a longtime member of VFW Post #3376 in Ephrata, PA, and of the Police & Fire Credit Union in Wilmington.
In his leisure hours, Mr. Burris greatly enjoyed taking trips to the beach, fishing, crabbing, and cheering each season for his favorite team, the Philadelphia Phillies. Most of all, he delighted in being known as a devoted family man; his happiest times were spent in the company of his wife, sons, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, all of whom loved him dearly.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Margaret H. “Peggy” Sutton Burris; sons, William W. Burris and wife, Pamela, of New Castle and Clifton L. Burris, Jr. of Middletown; granddaughters, Stephanie E. Burris of New Castle and Danielle N. Arnold and husband, John, of Wilmington; and great grandchildren, Ava, Julian, Lucas, and Alycia.
Visitation will be held from 6 pm to 8 pm on Tuesday, June 5, 2012, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle. Committal services will be held privately at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear.
