October 14, 1943 - October 30, 2023
David Jesse Hastings, Sr., age 80, of New Castle, DE, passed away on Monday, October 30, 2023.
Born in Wilmington, DE on October 14, 1943, he was a son of the late Jesse Hastings and Mary Denney. David was a graduate of Newark High School in 1961. He proudly served in the United States Army from 1961 until 1964. During this time, David met his wife, Mary at a USO dance and they were married on November 9, 1963. He made his career working at DuPont Co. for 39 years, until his retirement in 2004. David then worked part time for the Delaware Blue Rocks, a job he enjoyed for 10 seasons.
A friend to the community, David spent 55 years volunteering for the Boy Scouts of America where he made many long-lasting friendships. Over the years, he became a Scout Master and watched his son become an Eagle Scout. David was a talented baker and enjoyed treating his family and friends to his beautiful, homemade confections. Above all, he cherished his family and loved making memories with them, even holding on to his children’s awards and report cards from their childhood.
In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Hastings. He is survived by his loving wife of almost 60 years, Mary F. (Kershaw) Hastings; children, David C. Hastings (Gina) and Shirley Hastings; grandchildren, Taryn McKee and Evan Hastings; and great-grandson, Owen.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11 am on Friday, November 17, 2023, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 North DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a memorial service will begin at 11 am. Interment will be held privately in Gracelawn Memorial Park.
