Dorothea M. Matthews, age 76, of Newark, DE passed away on Thursday, June 6, 2019.

Born in Philadelphia, PA on May 12, 1943, she was a daughter of the late Warden A. and Dorothea M. (Costello) Meade. She provided gentle and loving care to many children as the owner and operator of Matthews Family Daycare. In her leisure time, Dorothea enjoyed gardening and tending to her koi pond.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William B. Matthews, Jr. Dorothea is survived by her daughters, Deborah Joy M. Gouge and Tracy E. Matthews, both of Newark; sisters, Arlene Plevyak of Malvern, PA and Janis Romer of Pottstown, PA; granddaughter, Miranda K. Matthews; and faithful, canine companion, Peakin.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 12:15 pm until 1:15 pm on Wednesday, June 12, 2019, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE. A committal service will be follow at 2 pm at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Dorothea’s name can be made to Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League, Inc., P.O. Box 285, Hanover, MD 21076.

  • Dottie provided wonderful loving care for our child 20 years ago. As a nervous first time mom I was so grateful for her. She was such a nice welcoming person & always had a smile on her face. My condolences to her family.
