E. Laverne Cohen
Mrs. E. Laverne Cohen, a retired educator, age 78, of Newark, DE, passed away on Wednesday, June 20, 2012, at her home.
Mrs. Cohen was born in Portsmouth, VA, on August 28, 1933, daughter of the late Olen Clifford Stewart and Mary Edith Sawyer Stewart. A gifted and dedicated teacher throughout her career, she received her bachelor’s degree in education from Salisbury University and was employed for many years as a math and science instructor in the middle school system in Salisbury. She later accepted a teaching position in the math and science departments at Christiana High School.
Mrs. Cohen had a great talent for needlecraft and especially enjoyed crocheting and knitting; she often handmade lovely afghans and clothing as special, cherished gifts for family and friends. An avid sports fan, she looked forward to cheering each season for her favorite team, the Philadelphia Eagles.
Her beloved husband of 40 years, Harry Cohen, passed away in 2006. She will be deeply missed by her devoted family and is survived by her children, Melanie Chamberlin, Joy Wemmer (Greg), and Darryl Cohen; brother, Olen C. Stewart, Jr. (Anne); grandchildren, Megan, Matthew, and Michael; niece, Lisa Lawhorn; nephew, Jack Carlin; and niece, Ellen Brachfield.
The family extends special thanks to the nurses and staff of Compassionate Care Hospice for their kindness and assistance during Mrs. Cohen’s illness.
A committal service will be held at 1 pm on Wednesday, June 27, 2012, in the chapel of Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear.
