Edward Hackford Ide, Jr. - Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Homes & Crematory

Edward Hackford Ide, Jr.

November 21, 1944 - June 26, 2024

Edward Hackford Ide, Jr., lived in Hartly, DE, and passed away peacefully at the early age of 79.   Dad was surrounded with love on the day of his passing on Wednesday, June 26, 2024.

Dad was born in Philadelphia, PA on November 21, 1944, he was the son of the late Edward H. and Anna (Maiden) Ide, Sr. As a young man, Dad played a very important role in the building of the Boeing CH-47 Chinook helicopter in Pennsylvania.  He spoke fondly of being able to work side by side with his dad for many years.  Starting his own family, Dad decided to move to Delaware where he worked building base housing at DAFB. His mechanical capabilities landed him a lead heavy equipment mechanic position with RA Boyer and then he moved on to James Julian for several years.   Dad decided to put down the heavy equipment tools and work locally at T&T Small engines where he enjoyed working on small engines for local community members.   Dad retired in 2016 after several years of driving many of the local contractors, mechanics, cabinet builders, and families of the Amish community … he was well loved and respected within the community.

Dad worked very hard at everything he did and always did it quietly and with integrity.  Although always busy with work, he managed to find time for his family, to make us feel special, and his grandchildren adored him.  Dad was talented and skilled at just about everything, including woodworking, where he created beautiful pieces for, and with, his grandchildren. He was also an experienced welder, and in his spare time, he loved tending to his vegetable garden.  Dad also liked to dance and cherished the moments he line danced with our mom in past years; sometimes, we would catch him dancing and reminiscing about those times with her in recent years.

In addition to his parents, Dad was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 34 years, Regina M. (Hoffman) Ide; and cousin, William Weiss.

He is survived by his children, Ed Ide III (Cheryl), Steve Ide (Shelly), and Debbie Ide, all of Smyrna; grandchildren, Lauren (Dean), Ashley (Zack), Jordan (Charles), Alyssa (Matt), and EJ; cousin, Alexandra Weiss; and sister, Annie Carr.

We would be honored if you would help us celebrate Dad’s life on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at Townsend Church, 4519 DuPont Parkway, Townsend, DE. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10am – 11am, and the funeral service will begin at 11 am.  Dad will be laid to rest following the funeral service next to his beloved wife, Gina, in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, 2928 Sharon Hill Road, Dover, DE.

Dad was very proud of us and his grandchildren, and especially loved how God is present in each of their lives.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dad’s memory to Townsend Church, 4519 DuPont Parkway, Townsend, DE 19734, to help support the Upward Sports Program, an outreach program which utilizes sports to support our youth and bring them closer to following God.
