Effie P. Parag, age 96, of Middletown, DE, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Friday, August 13, 2021.

Born in Goodwill, WV on January 3, 1925, she was a daughter of the late Henry Mack and Elsie Ann (Harman) Taylor. Effie worked as a machine operator for Phoenix Steel in Claymont. After her time at Phoenix Steel, she worked as a childcare aid into her 80s.

Effie was a talented musician, playing guitar and piano. She loved to play and sing with her brothers and sisters, especially gospel hymns or country-western tunes. Effie was a member of the Eastern Star. More than anything, Effie loved her family.

In addition to her parents, Effie was preceded in death by her husband, Stephen Parag; three sisters; and three brothers. She is survived by her daughters, Vera Jean Aaron, Deborah J. Morris, and Beverly Diane Fooks (Jack); son, Bascom F. Steele, Jr.; sisters, Ocie Watkins, Beatrice Brown, and Shirley Beckner; brother, Woodrow Taylor; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 30 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11 am on Friday, August 20, 2021 at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a funeral service will begin at 11 am. Face coverings will be required for all those in attendance not immunized with the COVID-19 vaccine per the Governor of Delaware. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Highway, New Castle, DE.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Effie’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105.

  • We were totally blessed to have such an amazing Grandma (Mom)! She loved us unconditionally! She was not only my Grandma, but also my “Mom”! She was my best friend, and always there for me! Could never repay her for all the years she took care of me! Was my biggest fan…no matter what!! You will be truly missed every day!! I do know you are in heaven and at peace, that gives me some comfort knowing you are in a better place! I will continue to talk to you every day, I know you hear me. Keep sending me your little signs, I see them! Love and miss you so much!
