Elisabeth “Betty” Boonin

Elisabeth Betty Joergensen Boonin, 77, died Feb. 5, 2011, at home in Newark, Delaware.

Daughter of Henry and Bertha Joergensen, Betty was born in her parents Bronx, New York, apartment located above a speakeasy owned by the gangster known as Dutch Schultz.

She attended New York City public schools and graduated from the School of Industrial Art in Manhattan, where she studied magazine and book design. At the time it was the only high school in the United States devoted to commercial art. She attended Hunter College while working full time at the New York Public Library.

She married Nathaniel N. Boonin, her husband of 56 years, in 1954 in New York City. They lived in Brooklyn Heights, New York; Cambridge, Massachusetts; Skillman, New Jersey; Princeton, New Jersey; and Onancock, Virginia, before moving to Newark, Delaware, in 2004.

Betty was a childrens librarian, dressmaker, tailor, florist, gardener and Hospice volunteer.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her three children and their spouses, Sara and Ron Malone of Petaluma, California; Michael Boonin and Angela Delli Santi of Hamilton Square, New Jersey; and Katherine and Patrick Andrus of Annandale, Virginia; her grandchildren, Jessica Delli Santi of Vienna, Virginia; and Ian, Rebecca, Byron and Stuart Andrus of Annandale, Virginia; a brother and sister-in-law, John and Marion Joergensen of Mashpee, Massachusetts; and many other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her sister, Annemarie Vollheim.

A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Sunday, February 20th, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Newark, 420 Willa Road, Newark, Delaware.
